The Art Center has always been one of my favorite spots in Des Moines. I usallly just go for the art and the experience. But it is great that you can also sit outside in the summer in the court yard and have a beer if you want. Or heck if you are hungry Tangerine (a fantastic catering company in DSM) now runs the restaurant at the Art Center. Recently I had a lunch date with my almost 4 year old son and we had a great time! He loved his fancy pants kids Grilled cheese which came on a pita with some grapes! Dad had a bowl of veggie soup and a beer. The portions are light and delicious and you couldn't have a better environment for a nice lunch! This would be a perfect spot to bring a date, have a business lunch, or heck just go solo and take a beer break from the art!
I had a great summer with Tangerine. At least every other Friday I had the opportunity and good fortune to be able to meet my wife for lunch in the courtyard (surrounded by the work of three great architects: Eliel Saarinen, I/M/ Pei, and Richard Meier) and enjoy inventive (but not ridiculous) and flavorful meals and deserts. The menu changes a bit from week to week depending on what is available/in season and the imagination of the chef. Delicious Cafe Burgers ( a beef patty with bacon jalapeño jam, provolone, tomato, lettuce, and wonderful crispy leeks. Served with the soup of the day, chips, or side salad), a variety of perfectly prepared quiches, soups warm and cold and each with a rich and summer-perfect blend of flavors and textures... You get the idea. What you need to know: * The wait staff are great * Days and hours are limited (as with many businesses these days) * It is rare, but some menu items can run out. Be there early-ish, or be flexible * Tangerine does catering so be on the look out for them
